Perovskite-silicon tandem solar is entering the manufacturing test

The signal

A US demonstration factory, a Chinese supplier's first export order and a Japanese outdoor durability trial show perovskite-silicon tandem solar moving from efficiency records into the harder stage of large-format manufacturing, customer validation and bankability.

Why this one

It demonstrates how to identify a trend before widespread adoption by connecting separate manufacturing, customer and validation clues across several countries.

The clue

Evidence is shifting from laboratory efficiency records toward factories, customer validation and outdoor durability testing.

Why it matters

Tandem panels capture more of the solar spectrum by adding a perovskite layer to a conventional silicon cell. Greater output per panel could matter where roof area, land, interconnection capacity or installation labour is constrained.

Evidence and interpretation

- Observed facts: Tandem PV opened a 40 MW demonstration factory in California and has begun producing full-size modules for validation. Trina Solar reported its first export order for tandem modules, destined for New Zealand. Kaneka began an outdoor Japanese trial and is targeting commercial sales in fiscal 2028. - Interpretation: These are company-reported early signals, not proof of bankability. But factory output, an initial order and outdoor testing represent three different commercialization steps across three markets. - Speculation: Tandem products may enter premium rooftops and space-constrained projects before competing broadly with conventional utility panels. - Alternatives globally: TOPCon, heterojunction and back-contact silicon technologies already possess mature production lines and financeable histories. Thin-film CdTe is another established alternative. Tandem panels must provide enough additional output to compensate for manufacturing complexity and durability uncertainty.

What to watch next

Watch independently certified production-module efficiency, field degradation through seasonal cycles, repeat orders, manufacturing yield, warranty terms and progression from tens-of-megawatts demonstration lines toward repeatable high-volume output; weak durability or poor yields would invalidate the acceleration thesis.
