Sweat sensing starts to resemble a consumables-and-software business

Europe — Spain; United States field-study analogue

The signal

Commercial sweat-sensing platforms combine reusable electronics, disposable sensing cards and coaching software, while technical studies probe usefulness and real-world missing data. Repeat sensor supply and trustworthy interpretation may matter more than another standalone wearable.

The clue

The early business model is a reusable reader, recurring sensor consumables and software—not merely another wrist-worn device.

Why it matters

Sports-technology suppliers and coaching businesses may face new recurring costs, component-quality requirements and data-integration opportunities. This is a monitoring-market signal, not evidence that consumer sensors can replace medical testing.

Evidence and interpretation

- Observed facts: Spain’s Onalabs offers single-use ONAS10 sensing cards, reusable ONASPORT hardware, an athlete portal and Garmin integration. Its product page is inconsistent about lactate availability, so current shipment of that feature is not assumed. Product documentation - Observed facts: A June 22 study compared sweat-inferred exercise thresholds with blood sampling and gas-exchange measurements in 36 participants; several authors disclosed Onalabs financial ties. A separate June 9 US field study tested Nix alongside other wearables in 30 farmworkers and recovered only 80% of Nix data. These are limited studies, not October breakthroughs. Exercise study · Independent field study - Interpretation: Distinct European and US efforts support a broader sensing-and-service pattern, but not equivalent capabilities: hydration monitoring and inferred lactate are different tasks. Heart-rate monitoring and periodic laboratory testing remain practical alternatives. - Speculation: Repeat consumable orders and validated interpretation software could create more durable businesses than hardware sales alone.

What to watch next

Strengthened by repeat institutional purchases, independently replicated results and reliable multi-season field data. Weakened if missing readings or recurring consumable costs outweigh benefits compared with heart-rate monitoring and periodic laboratory tests.
