Packaging suppliers are pairing chemistry with the coating machine
Europe — United Kingdom, Germany and Spain, with Italian–Swedish research

The signal
Supplier partnerships coupling barrier coatings with application equipment suggest packaging substitution may be procured as a qualified material-and-process system, not a stand-alone material.
The clue
Coating chemistry and the machinery that applies it are being offered as a coordinated packaging solution.
Why it matters
For food manufacturers, replacing packaging may require qualifying a production process and shelf-life performance—not simply buying a “greener” film or carton.
Evidence and interpretation
- Observed facts: On September 15, Sun Chemical and Archipelago announced a partnership pairing liquid barrier coatings with non-contact application equipment for paper and molded fibre; they reported a first validated, commercially available coating. On September 24, Siegwerk and Spain’s Enplater described a different route: a mostly single-material polypropylene pouch using a combined oxygen-barrier and white-ink application. Independent Italian–Swedish research illustrates the trade-off: its experimental coating improved oxygen resistance but not water-vapor resistance. That paper appeared online in September 2025, in a 2026 journal volume; it does not validate either commercial product. - Interpretation: Coated fibre and single-material plastic are competing systems, not interchangeable substitutes. Equipment integration, humidity resistance and food-specific testing could become valuable supplier capabilities. - Speculation: More contracts may bundle chemistry, application settings and qualification support.
What to watch next
Repeat converter orders and food-specific shelf-life, humidity, line-speed and yield results would strengthen the thesis; moisture failures, poor economics or recycling incompatibility would weaken it.
